Toronto has hundreds of photographers who will take your headshot. Most are competent. A smaller number specialize in headshots specifically — and that specialization matters more than it might seem. Here's how to narrow the field, avoid common mistakes, and book a session you'll actually be happy with.
What to look for in a headshot photographer
A portfolio that matches your use case
The most important question isn't "do their photos look good?" — it's "do their photos look good for what I need?" A photographer who excels at moody, editorial actor headshots may not be the right choice for a clean, corporate LinkedIn profile. Look at their portfolio through the lens of your specific context: the industry you work in, the platforms where your headshot will appear, and the impression you need to make.
If you're a lawyer, look for headshots that project authority and credibility, not artistic flair. If you're an actor, you want someone who understands casting — not just someone who can light a face well.
Consistent technical quality
Look for consistency across their portfolio, not just the best three images. Lighting, sharpness, and background quality should be high across the board. A photographer who has ten great shots and twenty mediocre ones is inconsistent — and you're just as likely to get a mediocre session as a great one.
Retouching that's included, not extra
In Toronto, most reputable headshot photographers include basic retouching in the session price. Be cautious of studios that charge separately for every retouched image — the cost adds up fast and the practice signals a business model built around upselling rather than delivering value. Confirm upfront: what's included, how many retouched images are delivered, and what the turnaround time is.
A clear process
Good headshot photographers brief you before the session — wardrobe, preparation, what to expect on the day. If a studio just sends you a booking confirmation with a time and address and nothing else, that's a yellow flag. The prep work is part of the result.
Where in Toronto to book
Most Toronto headshot studios are concentrated downtown — Financial District, Midtown, and downtown core. If you're outside the core, studios in North York, Etobicoke, and Mississauga offer comparable quality without the commute.
For corporate team shoots, on-location booking — where the photographer comes to your office — is often more practical than shuttling a team of 20 across town. Most studios, including ours, offer this.
Red flags to avoid
- Packages priced at $75–100: At that price point, you are paying for minimal time, no meaningful direction, and no included retouching. The result typically looks like it.
- No pre-session briefing: A photographer who gives you zero guidance before you arrive cares more about throughput than results.
- All-day booking calendars with no clear slots: Some studios run headshot "mills" — rapid-fire sessions where you're in and out in ten minutes. Fast can be fine (we run efficient sessions), but ten-minute slots with no direction produce ten-minute results.
- Charging separately for every retouched image: One or two retouched images should be included at any reasonable price point. Charging $25–40 per retouch on top of session fees is a common upsell pattern.
- No portfolio, or a portfolio of posed lifestyle shots with people you can clearly identify as stock models: This happens. Look for a real, verifiable headshot portfolio.
What to expect to pay

Why photographers who specialize matter
A photographer who shoots weddings, commercial products, and headshots is a generalist. A photographer who shoots headshots every day has made tens of thousands of micro-decisions about what expressions work, what angles are flattering, how to put a nervous subject at ease in the first five minutes, and what retouching level produces the most natural-looking results.
SpeedyHeadshots is a headshot-only studio. We don't shoot anything else. That focus is why our sessions are efficient, our direction is specific, and our results are consistent.
